This week's challenge: No internet

Yes, you read that right. This week's challenge is a doozy. I want you to stay off the internet.

Of course, I'd love if you'd read my blog everyday. But it's time to reconnect with ourselves, the people around us, books, and whatever else we neglect in our lives because of wasted hours online.

Now, I realize that in this age the lack of internet is crippling for some. For this reason there is an exception. You're allowed to partake of the internet at work. This isn't an excuse to lounge lazily in front of a computer monitor. You're going to be actively using the web for work.

I know this seems daunting. That's why it's a challenge. I have faith in each and everyone of you.

YOU CAN DO IT!!

This Week's Challenge: Read A Book

For some of you, this challenge will be a breeze. For others, this will be a difficult challenge, seemingly impossible, but very achievable. This week's challenge is to read just one book.

That's it.

That's all I'm asking of you.

Find a book whether it's fiction or nonfiction, a biography or a fantasy, self help or romance. I want to read every single line in it.

I want you to learn

In today's fast paced world, it's hard to find time for ourselves much less time to read. However, reading can have countless benefits. Here are just a few of the benefits of reading.

From improving your vocabulary to just helping to refocus, reading helps develop our lives further.

So, grab a book. Sit down. and READ.

If you're looking for some inspiration, here are a few of my favorites.

Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Others to Take Action

Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

Outliers: The Story of Success

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

Slaughter House Five

The Princess Bride (also, a fantastic movie!)

This Week's Challenge: Service Before Self

I've served nearly 10 years in the United States Air Force. In that time, one core value has spoken to me more than any other. "Service Before Self."

It's time to transition that core belief to the civilian world!

Your challenge: perform an act of service. Volunteer your time to help a cause you believe in! From giving time to a local homeless shelter to helping a friend in need, I want you to be altruistic.

I want you to be a beacon of service in your community. Giving money to charity doesn't count. Many people donate and forget, I want you to give something that we all have in equal amounts: Your time.

Be great, be fantastic, and serve the greater good. Make an effort to improve your community or further a cause you believe in!

Here are some great charities to spark your interest!

The Future Project: Connecting students to their passion
RSPCA: Prevention of Animal Cruelty

This Week's Challenge: Seeking Human Kindness

Photo by Enver Rahmanov. Posted under CC license.

One kind word can change someone's entire day. A few kind words can change someone's entire week. This is the point of this week's challenge. Be kind.

I challenge each of you to show a stranger a grand gesture of kindness. Simply asking someone to have a good day is not good enough. Picking up someone's dropped papers is not good enough. I want you to go out of your way to make a stranger's day, if not week.

Your actual gesture is completely under your control. Seek out an opportunity to show the world and that stranger the power of kindness.

Do not shy away from this week's challenge. Kindness can solve a lot of the world's problems if we were just aware of it's power. Be a beacon for those you meet in your life.

We're all fighting a great battle in life; carrying a heavy burden. Do your part to lighten someone's load. If only for a little while.

Who knows, you may find you LOVE being altruistic!

Post your successes, challenges, and stories below. We all would love to share in your experience!
